Series: Princess Academy #3

SUMMARY:

After a year at the king's palace, Miri has learned all about being a proper princess. But the tables turn when the student must become the teacher!

Instead of returning to her beloved Mount Eskel, Miri is ordered to journey to a distant swamp and start a princess academy for three sisters, cousins of the royal family. Unfortunately, Astrid, Felissa, and Sus are more interested in hunting and fishing than becoming princesses.

As Miri spends more time with the sisters, she realizes the king and queen's interest in them hides a long-buried secret. She must rely on her own strength and intelligence to unravel the mystery, protect the girls, complete her assignment, and finally make her way home.

REVIEW:

And just like that, the Princess Academy series has come to an end! I really enjoyed this series, and although The Forgotten Sisters wasn't quite as good as the first two books, I thought it was a pretty good conclusion. Shannon Hale has such a fun and easy-to-read writing style, and I think middle school girls (and even some younger readers) would really enjoy these books!

In this third book, Miri finds herself with another unexpected responsibility, and things don't exactly go according to plan. I enjoyed the new characters and setting, but what I especially appreciated were the messages throughout the story. There was a strong emphasis on choosing life over death, along with some beautiful themes of sisterhood, motherhood, and forgiveness. I also liked how the characters weren't perfect but learned from their mistakes and tried to do the right thing.

There was a little sweet romance, which I enjoyed, along with some adventure and interesting twists. Although the story was enjoyable, I didn't find it quite as captivating as the earlier books, especially the first one. Still, I thought it wrapped up the series nicely, and I was honestly sad to say goodbye to Miri and the other characters!

Overall, The Forgotten Sisters was a good read and a satisfying ending to a series I've really enjoyed. If you haven't read Princess Academy yet, I definitely recommend starting with the first book!

WHO I'D RECOMMEND TO:

I would recommend The Forgotten Sisters to girls ages 11+ who enjoy sweet princess stories, a little romance, and some adventure! The target age range is around 11–14, but I think girls of all ages could enjoy this series. I'm 21 and really enjoyed all three books!

THINGS TO MENTION:

This is a clean fantasy novel with some non-graphic violence, including a beheading and a discussion of an old custom involving cannibalism, although it never actually happens. In one chapter, the characters pretend to be witches, but the story doesn't encourage witchcraft. There are a few mentions of prayers and a creator god. The romance includes a couple of sweet, non-descriptive kisses.
