On The Fence

KASIE WEST

Age Range: 13/14 and up

On the fence is a sweet read about a girl named Charlotte Reynolds, AKA Charlie. She is a tomboy with three older brothers, and she would instead be playing basketball than flirting with boys. After getting another speeding ticket, her police officer dad demands that she get a summer job to pay for it, and she's surprised to find herself working at a Chichi Boutique and going out with a boy who thinks she is a girly girl. At night she goes outside to the fence where she talks about her problems to Braden, the boy next door who's also an honorary fourth brother. Braden may know her better than anyone else, but there's something that he does not know. Charlie is falling for him, hard. She doesn't know if she should tell him or keep it to herself because sometimes there are just some things that are not worth the risk.

I love boy next door and my older brothers best friend kind of books. Thats why I loved this book so much because it had both. On top of all that the main character, Charile, is a tomboy. There was just so much that I loved about this book, but there were also some stuff that I didn't like that much. Charile lived with all boys and only had boy friends and none of them were treating her like a girl so she tried to change herself. I don't feel like anyone needs to change for people to like them. Other then that this book is one of my favorites. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Things to mention: Her mom committed suicide by crashing her car when Charlie was very little. Braden's dad has a drinking problem. He is also verbally abusive, and he gives Braden a black eye. Charlie tells her brother that if he doesn't give back her phone, she will say to every girl that he knows that he is gay, but he isn't really. Charlie says "crap" and "butt," and Braden makes fun of her for it. A very side character was listing off things that guys think of and sex was one of them. There are some kissing details.
